Hi, I'm Eric. I've been a bike geek for most of my life. Bike Geek Gear is inspired by 5 decades of playing with bikes, being involved in cycling at the highest levels, and being a fan of bike racing. You'll see nods to cycling history and to what's happening today. I hope you find something you'll like and I thank you for your support!
A bit of my history...I tore around the woods behind my neighborhood as a kid and did a bit of BMX racing. Eventually I moved on to a "10 speed" in my early teen years and started riding farther and farther from home. I was the kid who hung around the bike shops staring at things I wanted but couldn't afford. When I could fit new parts into my teenage budget I did the work myself and became a decent home mechanic.
I eventually saved up enough for my first "real" bike - a Bianchi with Columbus Al tubing and a mix of Campy Nuovo Record and lower level components. I finally bugged the shop I bought that bike from enough that they gave me a job. I raced that Bianchi between 1983 and 1987. I was reasonably good at time trials but my results overall scratched at the bottom of mediocrity.
My mechanical skills were better than my racing skills and I progressed from helping friends at races to working neutral support with Campagnolo and Mavic. I was part of the second USCF (precursor to USA Cycling) Mechanics' Camp in May of 1988.
Not long after that I got my first job with a pro team for the remainder of the 1988 season. I continued with the various iterations of that team through the end of the 1991 season. Our probably team sponsor for 92 pulled the plug too late to find money and the 92 season was gone. For 1993 a friend in the cycling world reached out to me about running a high level amateur team for the season. The team did most of the big races around the country and we did well. Time has made the memories foggy but we won a few national championships and a bunch of races. As 94 approached it was time to find a real job and - kinda - get on with my life.
I've worked at a ton of events and high level charity events since then and continue to do that to this day.I still ride and I still love working on bikes. I'm looking forward to channeling my creativity through this project.
